Make Garage Remodeling a Fun Family Activity

Posted on Aug 6, 2016

The garage is definitely the most valuable storage space you have around the house, so it would be a pity not to take advantage of it. While it should be extremely organized and airy, you probably find it difficult to start de-cluttering it. It is true that this is often an annoying task, but if you want to make the best out of the space in your garage, then you should consider a general cleaning. In order to make things easier, you can implement some efficient storage systems, such as garage racking – these will help you deposit a lot of things, while also making the place look nicer. If you want to combine utility with pleasure, then you should transform the refurbishing plan into a fun family activity. Just let everybody know that at the end of the week, for instance, you want to start a group project, tease them about the results, and thus everybody will want to participate.

Distribute chores to each member

The activity will be extremely appealing, especially to children! Kids are most of the times more enthusiastic than adults, even when it comes to household activities. You can take advantage of their energy, by delegating them simple tasks. It is surprising how children take everything serious, while also making it fun. Enforce them to feel responsible and tell them that they are doing something important. You can ask them to arrange light weight objects in boxes, while you take care of the heavy loads. Furthermore, an interesting thing to do would be offering each of them a category of objects, but remember to make the tasks even: while one will have to arrange the CDs, the other will have to organize the books.

Make sure everyone has their zone

Since you want the garage to be an organized place, then you should distribute each member of the family their own area. This means that besides cleaning that part of the room, they will also be able to put all their items there – this way, each one will know where to look for what they need, without going through someone else’s stuff and messing it up. You can also come up with playful ideas, such as having a competition between kids: promise to offer a nice reward to the one who has the most organized and good-looking storage space. Just thinking about winning and getting a present will keep them stay motivated until the work is done.

Make sure the whole process is safe

Taking into consideration that you have kids around, you have to make sure the space is secure. You would not want any accident to happen, so you have to take some extra safety measures. Children are often very curious, which is why they will want to test everything they find around. Remember to hide away any object that may seem dangerous, such as scissors, hammers and so on. In addition to this, try to avoid detergents or chemical cleaners, and use appropriate equipment (cleaning gloves, masks or even helmets, if necessary).

Increase the safety and the security of your garage

The best way to do this is to install a garage door opener. These devices come with sensors which prevent the doors from opening or closing if there are any obstacles in the way. Thus, you can rest assured knowing that there will be no accidents if the kids are playing near the garage door when you want to open it. Moreover, these devices are also very secure, as they have many features meant to prevent break-ins. Believe it or not, a lot of house break-ins occur due to a poor garage security.
